Google PMax Channel-Level Reporting: See Where Every Ad Dollar Goes
What Channel-Level Reporting Actually Shows You
Performance Max has been called a black box since launch. You put money in, conversions came out, and you had no idea whether Search, Display, YouTube, or Gmail was doing the heavy lifting. In 2026, Google finally cracked that box open by adding channel-level breakdowns to PMax campaign reporting.
To find the report, open Google Ads, select a PMax campaign, and look under the Insights tab. You will see a performance summary split by channel: Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Each channel shows its own spend, impressions, clicks, conversions, and cost metrics. If your campaign has no assets running on a given channel (no video assets means no YouTube data), that channel either appears empty or is omitted entirely.
These breakdowns also support segmentation by device, time of day, conversion type, and network. You can drill into YouTube specifically and see mobile versus desktop spend, or daytime versus evening performance. The report also includes a diagnostics module that flags potential issues on specific channels, such as low asset ratings limiting Display reach or missing video assets keeping YouTube allocation at zero.
Which Metrics Each Channel Reports
Not every channel exposes identical metrics. Here is what is currently visible per channel.
| Channel | Spend | Impressions | Clicks | Conversions | CPC | CPA | Video Views | Product Feed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A | N/A |
| Shopping | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A | Yes |
| Display | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A | N/A |
| YouTube | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A |
| Discover | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A | N/A |
| Gmail | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A | N/A |
| Maps | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | N/A | N/A |
Shopping includes product feed metrics: which SKUs received impressions and how clicks distributed across products. YouTube adds video-specific dimensions like view count and completion rate. The remaining channels share a standard set of impression, click, conversion, and cost metrics.
Using Channel Data to Optimize Budget Allocation
Now that you can see where PMax puts your money, you can actually make informed budget decisions.
First, establish a baseline over two to four weeks. Let the campaign run long enough to stabilize CPA and ROAS numbers per channel. Display and Discover in particular fluctuate heavily in short windows.
Second, identify channels that consume budget without producing results. E-commerce advertisers frequently discover that Display accounts for 30 to 40 percent of PMax spend while contributing only 5 to 10 percent of conversions, with a CPA three to five times higher than Search.
Third, use asset strategy to steer allocation indirectly. PMax does not yet offer per-channel budget caps, but you can influence allocation through assets. If YouTube CPA is too high, removing video assets forces the system to redistribute that budget. If Search performs well but gets a small share, improving text headlines and descriptions can prompt higher Search allocation.
The Search Partners Opt-Out Alpha and What It Signals
Starting in July 2026, Google began an alpha test on a limited set of accounts that allows advertisers to opt out of Search Partners and Display channels within PMax campaigns. PMax was designed as an all-channel bundle with no mechanism to exclude a channel. Search Partners has been the most contested piece because it covers traffic on Google’s search partner sites, where quality varies widely.
The alpha signals that Google recognizes the fully automated model needs adjustment. For advertisers in the alpha, try opting out of Search Partners and measure whether CPA drops and conversion quality improves. Most early feedback suggests CPA decreases, though total impression volume contracts as well.
Advertisers outside the alpha can still use channel-level reporting to quantify exactly how much Search Partners costs and what the conversion quality looks like. If the data is poor, those numbers become concrete evidence for conversations with your Google account representative.
Practical Scenarios for E-Commerce Advertisers
Consider a home goods seller running PMax with a ten thousand dollar monthly budget who previously had no visibility into channel allocation. The channel report reveals that Search and Shopping together account for 45 percent of spend, Display takes 35 percent, YouTube takes 15 percent, and Gmail plus Maps together are under 5 percent. Conversion data tells a sharper story: Search and Shopping drive 80 percent of conversions, while Display’s 35 percent of budget produces only 12 percent of conversions.
Two options from here. Either improve Display creative quality so the budget produces better returns, or reduce generic display assets so the system allocates less toward Display. Check whether YouTube’s 15 percent share is justified too: if the video assets running there are auto-generated compilations, that spend is likely wasted.
Seasonal businesses benefit differently. A swimwear or outdoor gear seller will see sharp differences between peak and off-peak performance by channel. With channel data, you can adjust asset strategy seasonally rather than running the same mix year-round. Channel-level reporting does not give you a per-channel budget dial, but it gives you the data to understand where money goes and influence direction through asset decisions.
