Meta Advantage+ Shopping 2026 Updates: SKU-Level Control, In-App Checkout, WhatsApp Placements
What Changed in ASC in 2026
At Shoptalk 2026 in March, Meta released a significant wave of updates to Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns. Most are live or in phased rollout across advertiser accounts. For cross-border ecommerce brands running Meta ads, this is the biggest ASC update since the product launched.
Six key changes were announced. Product Set Optimization introduces SKU-level budget control. Budget caps now split between existing and new customer spending. A native Buy Now button enables in-app checkout without redirecting to your store. WhatsApp Status joins the ASC placement inventory. The conversion volume threshold for effective optimization has dropped to roughly 25 conversions per week. And Instagram creator commission tracking is now integrated directly into shopping ad attribution.
Meta also shared that approximately 65% of advertisers on the platform are already using Advantage+ tools to scale campaigns. That number tells you where the platform is heading — ASC is becoming the default structure for ecommerce advertising on Meta, and manual campaign setups are getting progressively less support.
Meta expects you to mark AI-generated or significantly edited assets at the ad level. Failure to disclose can result in ad disapproval or account-level restrictions.
How to Use Product Set Optimization
Product Set Optimization, or PSO, is the most actionable feature in this release. Previously, ASC would take your entire product catalog and let the algorithm decide what to promote. PSO changes that by letting you group specific SKUs into sets and tell Meta which groups to prioritize.
The setup happens in two places. First, go to Commerce Manager and create Product Sets using filter rules — you can filter by product tag, price range, inventory level, or custom label. Then, in Ads Manager when you build an ASC ad set, a Product Set selector appears under Dynamic Creative Optimization. Pick the set you created, and Meta will allocate spend and impressions preferentially to products within that group.
Consider a seller with 200 SKUs. Instead of feeding the full catalog into one ASC campaign, they create three product sets: a high-margin set for products above 40% margin, a seasonal set for current quarter arrivals, and a clearance set for overstock. Each set runs in its own ASC ad group with a tailored budget ratio.
| Product Set | SKU Count | Filter Rule | Budget Allocation | Objective |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High-Margin Core | 45 | Margin over 40%, sold in last 90 days | 50% | Profit stability |
| Spring Collection | 60 | Tagged spring or 2026-Q2 launch | 30% | Volume and acquisition |
| Clearance | 95 | Inventory age over 60 days, below avg price | 20% | Inventory liquidation |
The strategic value: before PSO, ASC would funnel most of your budget toward low-ticket, high-conversion items. With sets, you can force the algorithm to push high-margin products alongside the easy converters. Keep each set to at least 15 or 20 SKUs — too few products leaves the algorithm without enough exploration room.
Budget Controls and the Buy Now Button
The budget control update introduces dual caps for existing versus new customers within a single ASC campaign. In the ad set Budget section, you will now see an Existing Customer Cap and a New Customer Cap as separate fields. This gives you direct control over how much of your spend goes toward retention versus acquisition.
For accounts with high repeat purchase rates, this is critical. You can cap existing customer spend to prevent the algorithm from overspending on people who would have bought anyway. Or, if your brand strategy is growth-focused, you can weight the budget heavily toward new customer acquisition and let the system find lookalikes at scale.
The Buy Now button is Meta’s push into native social commerce. When users see your ASC ad in Instagram or Facebook feeds, they can tap Buy Now and complete the purchase without ever leaving the app. Meta reports that ASC ads using in-app checkout see 12% to 18% higher conversion rates compared to redirect-to-website flows.
To enable Buy Now, you need Meta Checkout set up in Commerce Manager — that means configuring payment processing, tax settings, and return policies. Then in your ASC ad set, set the Destination to Meta Checkout instead of Website. Keep in mind that this keeps the transaction inside Meta’s ecosystem. Your website does not receive the traffic, and pixel events are handled differently. For brands that rely on on-site data collection, this trade-off matters.
WhatsApp Placements and Lower Conversion Threshold
WhatsApp Status is now available as an ASC placement. The format mirrors Instagram Stories — full-screen, vertical, 24-hour expiry. For sellers who already maintain WhatsApp contact lists, this placement reaches audiences in a more personal context than a traditional feed ad.
The value proposition is private-channel reach. Users who have your number saved will see your ad in their Status stream. Engagement in this semi-familiar context tends to run higher than open feed placements. Creative should be vertical images or short videos under 15 seconds, with a clear call-to-action button. The format rewards visually clean, product-forward imagery over text-heavy designs.
The conversion threshold update is significant for smaller accounts. ASC historically required around 50 conversions per week for the algorithm to stabilize. That number has reportedly dropped to approximately 25 conversions per week. Accounts averaging 3 to 4 conversions per day can now run ASC with meaningful results. If your account is below that, start with a week of broad targeting manual campaigns to seed data, then switch to ASC.
On the creator economy side, Instagram shopping ads now include built-in creator commission tracking. When a creator’s UGC content is used in your ASC ads, the system automatically tracks sales generated by that creative and calculates the corresponding commission. This eliminates manual reconciliation and makes affiliate programs much easier to manage within the Meta ecosystem.
Practical Advice
ASC is becoming the default structure for Meta ecommerce advertising. Manual campaign setups are receiving progressively less algorithmic support and traffic priority. If you are still running traditional interest-based targeting with manual bids, the migration window is open now — it will not stay open indefinitely.
Before migrating, prepare three things. Organize your catalog into logical product sets so PSO does not start with an unstructured feed. Prepare multilingual creative for each target market — ASC distributes based on creative quality, and different language audiences need different copy and imagery. Verify your pixel and Conversions API are functioning correctly, since ASC demands higher data quality than manual campaigns.
Do not skip the AI creative disclosure. If you use Midjourney, DALL-E, or any AI tool to generate ad assets, check the AI Generated box when creating the ad. Meta’s review system auto-detects AI-created content now. Non-disclosure penalty is not worth the 10 seconds it takes to check a box.
The core skill shift with ASC is away from audience targeting and toward creative quality plus product set strategy. Your job is to keep producing strong creative and to structure your product sets in a way that aligns with business goals. Leave targeting to the algorithm and focus your energy on the things it cannot do — understanding your brand, your margins, and your customers.
