Agentic Commerce Protocols Compared: UCP vs ACP vs Shopify Catalog
Understanding the Three Protocols
The start of 2026 brought significant developments in agentic commerce infrastructure. On January 11, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) at NRF, partnering with Shopify, Walmart, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and 20+ other retailers. In February, OpenAI and Stripe launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) alongside ChatGPT Checkout. Shopify followed with the general availability of Agentic Storefronts in March, after announcing the initiative in December 2025.
For cross-border sellers, the question is straightforward: what are the differences, and which protocol should you prioritize?
Google UCP: The Open Search Protocol
UCP is designed to enable direct communication between AI assistants and merchant systems. It supports MCP, A2A, and various API standards, creating interoperability across platforms. The March 19 update added three critical capabilities: Cart functionality for multi-item checkout, Catalog for real-time pricing and inventory synchronization, and Identity Linking to automatically apply loyalty benefits during AI-assisted purchases.
Users can now complete checkout directly within AI Mode Search and Gemini without redirecting to external sites. Google is also rolling out a simplified Merchant Center onboarding process to reduce integration friction for merchants.
OpenAI/Stripe ACP: Conversational Commerce Infrastructure
ACP powers the ChatGPT Checkout experience. Launched in February 2026 alongside ChatGPT advertising, it taps into ChatGPT’s 400+ million weekly active users. Ad CPMs range from $18-65, with self-serve advertising becoming available in April 2026. Product carousel ads are now live on the platform.
For Shopify merchants, ACP integration is already available. The protocol’s strength lies in conversational scenarios where users discuss needs with ChatGPT, and the AI recommends and processes purchases entirely within the conversation flow.
Shopify Catalog: One-Click Multi-Channel Distribution
The standout feature of Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts is automatic syndication. Upload your product data once, and it distributes automatically to ChatGPT, Copilot, Google, and other channels. AI-driven orders grew 15x in 2025, and shoppers using Copilot were 194% more likely to convert compared to traditional browsing.
Following the March 2026 GA release, non-Shopify platforms can now access the ecosystem through the Agentic Plan. Configuration is straightforward: navigate to Settings, find Sales Channels, and toggle each channel on or off based on your distribution strategy.

Choosing the Right Protocol
Use this decision framework based on your current situation:
Platform-First Approach: If you are already on Shopify, start with Catalog. Single configuration enables multi-channel distribution with the best conversion data.
Channel-First Approach: If maximizing reach across Google Search and Gemini users is your priority, UCP is the way to go. This is especially relevant for sellers already using Google Merchant Center.
Conversation-First Approach: If your target audience is active on ChatGPT or you want to experiment with conversational marketing, ACP should be your first choice. The 400+ million weekly active user base represents significant opportunity.
| Seller Type | Primary Recommendation | Secondary Option | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Merchants | Shopify Catalog | UCP | Native integration, lowest cost |
| Multi-Platform Sellers | UCP | Shopify Catalog | Broadest coverage, unified standard |
| DTC Brands | ACP | UCP | High conversion in conversational contexts |
| Small/Medium Sellers | Shopify Catalog | None | Fast setup, low maintenance |
Evaluate your current platform, identify where your target customers spend their time, and assess your team’s capacity for integration work. Start with one primary protocol, validate the results with data, then expand strategically based on performance.
